If you have been priced out of the Farmington Valley and keep wondering whether there is a Litchfield County town where your budget still works, Torrington deserves a serious look. It is the largest city in the county, and in 2026 it is one of the few places in the Litchfield Hills where a typical home still starts with a 3.
What it costs to buy in Torrington right now
As of mid-2026, Zillow puts Torrington’s typical home value around $305,690, up about 4.5% over the past year, with a median sale price near $307,000. Homes are moving fast too, with a median of about 10 days to go under contract and roughly 104 homes on the market (Zillow, June 2026).
Here is the part that matters. Zillow pegs the typical Litchfield County home at about $428,304. Torrington sits more than $120,000 below the county number. If you love the idea of the Litchfield Hills but the price tags in Litchfield, Washington, or Kent made you wince, Torrington is the entry point into the same region.
What the town is actually like
Torrington has about 34,457 residents, which makes it feel more like a small city than a sleepy village. You get a walkable downtown along Main Street, the historic Warner Theatre for shows, and the kind of mill-town bones that have been slowly getting new restaurants and shops. Set in the foothills of the Litchfield Hills, it trades some polish for space, trails, and a slower pace.
Location is a quiet strength. You are roughly 45 minutes from Hartford, close to Waterbury, and a short drive from the lakes and state parks that make this corner of Connecticut a weekend destination for everyone else.
Who Torrington fits
This is a strong match for first-time buyers who got outbid in West Hartford or Simsbury, for remote workers who want more house and land for the money, and for anyone who wants the Litchfield County lifestyle without the Litchfield County price. Families like the room to breathe; downsizers like that they can own, not rent, and still have cash left over.
The honest caveats
Winters are real here. Expect cold and roughly 55 inches of snow a year, so budget for plowing and heat. Inventory is thin and fast, so when the right house appears you need financing lined up and an agent ready to move the same week, not next month. And if a daily Hartford commute is non-negotiable, drive it at rush hour before you commit.
