Living in West Hartford, Connecticut: A Local’s Guide

Last updated: August 16, 2026

If you are weighing a move and West Hartford keeps landing on your list, you are not alone. It is one of the most searched towns in Hartford County, and for good reason. So here is the honest local picture of what living in West Hartford, Connecticut actually looks like in 2026, from what homes cost to what you will pay in taxes to what makes people stay for decades.

Is West Hartford a Good Place to Live?

For a lot of buyers, yes, and the reasons are consistent. West Hartford pairs a genuinely walkable town center with established, tree-lined neighborhoods and a strong school system. You get the feel of a small town with the amenities of a city, which is a rare combination in Hartford County. The trade-off, and I will not spin it, is cost. The homes, the taxes, and the demand all sit above the county average. Whether that trade-off is worth it depends on what you value, and that is exactly the kind of thing I talk through with clients before they ever tour a house.

The West Hartford Housing Market in 2026

Demand here is real. According to Redfin, the median sale price in West Hartford was around $530,000 as of mid-2026, up about 1 percent year over year, with competitive homes still drawing multiple offers and often going under contract in roughly a month. Zillow puts the typical home value closer to $515,000, up roughly 5 percent over the past year. The two sources use different methods, so treat them as a range rather than a single number, but both point the same direction: prices are firm and inventory moves fast.

What that means for you as a buyer is simple. Well-priced homes in the popular neighborhoods still draw multiple offers, so you want financing lined up and a clear plan before you walk into an open house. As a seller, it means your equity has likely grown, and a well-prepared listing can move quickly.

What You Will Actually Pay: Cost of Living and Property Taxes

This is the part people underestimate. West Hartford’s cost of living runs higher than much of the state, and property taxes are the biggest line item. The Town of West Hartford set the 2026 mill rate at 46.77, or about $46.77 per $1,000 of assessed value, but here is the piece that trips buyers up: Connecticut taxes 70 percent of a home’s market value, not the full price. So a $500,000 home is assessed at $350,000, which works out to roughly $16,370 a year, not the $23,000-plus you would get by applying the mill rate to the full purchase price. Ownwell puts West Hartford’s median effective property tax rate above both the Connecticut and national medians, so it is smart to budget for taxes early, not as an afterthought.

Schools in West Hartford

Schools are a top driver of demand here. West Hartford Public Schools operate 16 schools across the town, and both Hall and Conard high schools consistently rank among the stronger public high schools in Connecticut. In SchoolDigger‘s latest rankings, Hall places around 10th and Conard around 22nd out of 141 Connecticut high schools. Strong schools are also part of why homes hold their value in this market. If school assignment matters to your search, know that it can vary by street, so it is worth confirming before you commit to a neighborhood.

Things to Do: West Hartford Center and Blue Back Square

The lifestyle draw is West Hartford Center and the adjacent Blue Back Square, a walkable stretch of restaurants, local boutiques, cafes, a movie theater, and regular community events. Add in parks, the reservoir trails nearby, and easy access into Hartford County job centers, and you get a town where you can spend a Saturday without ever getting in the car. For many of my clients, that walkability is the thing that turns a maybe into a yes.
